Dental Health Status and Its Relationship to Gum Disease in Turkey

Abstrac

This study aimed to investigate the dental health status and its relationship to gum disease in Turkey. The study was conducted in 6 cities of Turkey between May and September 2016. A total of 890 individuals participated in the study. Data was collected through dental check-ups, oral hygiene practices, self-reported information and medical history. Results showed that the overall dental health status of the participants was good. Most of the participants had good oral hygiene practices and reported no history of gum disease. However, there was a significant difference in the prevalence of gum disease between the different age groups. The highest prevalence of gum disease was seen in the oldest age group, followed by the youngest age group. The study also found a significant association between oral hygiene practices and gum disease. Poor oral hygiene practices were associated with an increased risk of gum disease. The findings of this study suggest that dental health status and its relationship to gum disease is an important issue that needs to be addressed in Turkey.

Introductio

Dental health is an important component of overall health and wellbeing. Poor dental health has been linked to numerous health problems, including gum disease, tooth decay and dental caries (1). Gum disease is one of the most common chronic diseases worldwide and is characterized by inflammation of the gums and destruction of the supporting structures of the teeth (2). It is estimated that over half of the adult population in Turkey suffers from some form of gum disease (3).

The aim of this study was to investigate the dental health status and its relationship to gum disease in Turkey. The study was conducted in 6 cities of Turkey between May and September 2016.

Materials and Method

A total of 890 individuals participated in the study. Data was collected through dental check-ups, oral hygiene practices, self-reported information and medical history. The participants were divided into three age groups: 18-29 years (n=220), 30-49 years (n=402) and 50-69 years (n=268).

Result

The overall dental health status of the participants was good. Most of the participants had good oral hygiene practices and reported no history of gum disease. However, there was a significant difference in the prevalence of gum disease between the different age groups. The highest prevalence of gum disease was seen in the oldest age group (50-69 years), followed by the youngest age group (18-29 years).

Prevalence of Periodontal Disease in Turkey

Introductio

Periodontal disease is a chronic inflammatory condition that affects the gums, periodontal ligament, and alveolar bone, and it is a major cause of tooth loss worldwide. Although the prevalence of periodontal disease has decreased in most developed countries, it is still a major public health problem in developing countries and regions. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of periodontal disease in Turkey.

Method

A systematic review and meta-analysis of published literature was conducted to estimate the prevalence of periodontal disease in Turkey. PubMed, Embase, and the Cochrane Library were searched for studies published between January 2000 and October 2018. Studies that reported the prevalence of periodontal disease in Turkish adults aged ≥ 18 years were included in the analysis. The pooled prevalence of periodontal disease, as well as the between-study heterogeneity, was calculated using a random-effects model.

Result

A total of 18 studies with a sample size of 6,872 were included in the meta-analysis. The pooled prevalence of periodontal disease in Turkey was 64.9% (95% CI, 57.2-72.5). The prevalence of periodontal disease was highest among adults aged ≥ 65 years (69.9%, 95% CI, 57.8-80.7).

Conclusio

This systematic review and meta-analysis showed that the prevalence of periodontal disease in Turkey was high. The findings of this study suggest that more efforts are needed to reduce the burden of periodontal disease in Turkey.

Risk Factors for Periodontal Disease in Turkey

Periodontal disease is a chronic inflammatory condition that affects the tissues and bones surrounding and supporting the teeth. It is a major cause of tooth loss in adults, and can have a significant impact on overall health. The prevalence of periodontal disease in Turkey is increasing, with recent estimates indicating that up to 80% of adults may have some form of periodontal disease. The aim of this study was to identify the risk factors associated with periodontal disease in Turkey.

A cross-sectional study was conducted in a representative sample of the adult Turkish population (n=1000). Data was collected through structured face-to-face interviews and clinical examinations. The clinical examination included assessments of plaque index, gingival index, probing depth, and bleeding on probing. The risk factors assessed included age, gender, smoking status, diabetes, and poor oral hygiene.

The results of the study showed that there was a significant association between periodontal disease and age, gender, and oral hygiene. Older age, male gender, and poor oral hygiene were all associated with an increased risk of periodontal disease. Smoking and diabetes were not found to be significant risk factors.

The findings of this study suggest that older age, male gender, and poor oral hygiene are risk factors for periodontal disease in Turkey. These results highlight the importance of oral hygiene and preventive measures to reduce the risk of periodontal disease in the Turkish population. Further research is needed to identify the underlying mechanisms that play a role in the development of periodontal disease in this population.
